Show your reviews in 3 steps

1

Install in ~2 minutes

Install the bundle zip from System > Install Extensions -- component, module, shortcode plugin, and SP Page Builder addon in one go. Then enable the two plugins under System > Manage > Plugins.

2

Connect Google once

Open Components > MuRu Reviews > Settings, paste your Google Place ID and API key, pick a layout and count, and hit Refresh Now on the dashboard. Your average rating, total count, and reviews appear.

3

Publish anywhere

Drop a module in any position, a {murureviews} shortcode in any article, a full-page menu item, or the MuRu Reviews addon in SP Page Builder -- all four read the same data, so they never disagree.

Before you connect Google, two things to know:

  1. 1.You need a Google Places API (New) key -- the setup guide link is built into Settings.
  2. 2.Restrict the key by IP: all Google calls run server-side, never in the visitor's browser.
  3. 3.Google attribution stays on every render -- it is required by Google's terms, and MuRu Reviews adds it for you.

Which one sounds like you?

Pick your situation -- every path starts with the same free install.

"Our Google reviews are great -- nobody sees them"

Free

9 out of 10 customers read reviews before choosing, but yours sit on Google while visitors decide on your website.

  • Your average rating and best reviews appear on the pages where visitors decide
  • Minimum-rating and count controls put your strongest social proof first
  • Google attribution included automatically, the way Google requires

"We build client sites with SP Page Builder"

Free + Pro

Dropping a review widget into a page-builder layout usually means pasting third-party embeds that fight the template.

  • Native MuRu Reviews addon in the addons panel, same options as the module
  • Live editor preview updates as you change layout, count, and toggles
  • Missing config shows a muted placeholder -- never a broken page

"Our best testimonials aren't on Google"

Pro

Great quotes live in emails, chat screenshots, or a spreadsheet -- with no clean way to show them beside Google reviews.

  • Paste custom testimonials as JSON (sample file included) in Settings
  • Manual reviews merge with Google reviews under one combined score
  • Per-source filtering lets visitors -- or you -- narrow by origin

"I manage sites for many clients"

Free + Pro

Every extra extension is another zip to track, another update to chase, another thing that can break a page.

  • One bundle installs everything; Joomla's own updater delivers every release
  • One setup feeds module, shortcode, menu page, and SPPB addon at once
  • Rendering never fatals: clear friendly states instead of blank areas or errors

"Page speed is non-negotiable"

Free

Third-party review widgets load remote scripts on every page view and drag down Core Web Vitals.

  • Reviews are fetched server-side and cached -- the frontend never calls Google
  • Dependency-free markup and CSS; the carousel is vanilla JS, no CDN ever
  • Reviewer avatars lazy-load with an initials fallback, never blocking

"We want reviews to help SEO"

Free + Pro

Reviews locked inside iframes or remote widgets are invisible to search engines.

  • Reviews render as real HTML in your page -- readable by crawlers
  • Structured-data basics ship in Free, with advanced schema on the Pro roadmap
  • Exact rating kept for search engines while stars paint the visual score

One setup feeds every display

Most review widgets are copy-paste embeds: a remote script you don't control, styled by someone else, slow on every page view, and invisible to search engines. MuRu Reviews is the opposite -- a native Joomla extension with one Review Engine at its center: provider fetches and normalizes reviews, the cache stores them, and every display path renders the same data.

Change a setting once -- layout, count, minimum rating -- and your module, shortcode, menu page, and SP Page Builder addon all follow. There is no separate configuration per placement, no drift between the homepage widget and the testimonials page, and no third-party script deciding what your visitors see.

Google first, more sources on the way.

Version 1.0 connects Google Business Profile and (in Pro) your own manual reviews. Settings already lists Trustpilot, JED, Facebook, Tripadvisor, Yelp, G2, and Capterra -- each will simply switch on in a future update, with no reinstall and no new setup. Every source uses official APIs only: never scraping, ever.

Native, not embedded

No iframes, no remote widgets. Reviews render as your template's own HTML and CSS, readable by visitors, screen readers, and search engines alike.

Fast by architecture

The frontend only ever reads the local cache. Google is contacted server-side on refresh -- visitors never wait on an API, and no visitor data goes to Google.

Honest about state

Not configured yet, Google returned no review texts, filters too narrow -- every state gets a clear, friendly message instead of a blank area or a fatal error.

Pro grows, Free stays complete

Free covers Google reviews end to end. Pro adds your own reviews, more layouts, and smart filters -- and an unlicensed Pro install simply renders Free-level output, never a broken page.

Free stays free: Google reviews, all four display paths, and caching keep working with no account or license. If a Pro license expires, the Pro rows above fall back to Free-level output -- your manual reviews and settings stay saved and come back untouched when it is active again. Rows marked roadmap are not in v1.0.0: each ships in a future Pro update with no reinstall.

What's New

Version 1.0.0 -- the first stable release of both Free and Pro:

Google reviews end to end (Free)

Connect your Business Profile with a Place ID + API key, hit Refresh Now, and your average rating, total count, and reviews are cached and ready to display.

Four display paths, one setup

Module, {murureviews} shortcode, full-page menu item, and SP Page Builder addon all render the same cached data through one Review Engine.

Cards, List & Basic carousel (Free)

Three layouts for every spot: a responsive grid, compact rows, and a dependency-free slider with prev/next and dots.

Manual reviews (Pro)

Paste custom testimonials as JSON -- a sample file is included -- and they merge with Google reviews under one combined score.

Masonry, Testimonial & Badge (Pro)

Three more layouts across all four display paths, license-gated and gracefully degrading when unlicensed.

Keyword & source filters (Pro)

Search review text and narrow by source on the module, shortcode, menu page, and SPPB addon alike.

Native Joomla update feeds

Free and Pro each register their own update server, so new releases appear under System > Update > Extensions -- Pro feeds carry the license download ID.

Never a broken page

SVG stars with accurate partial fill, lazy avatars with initials fallback, and friendly messages for every empty state -- not configured, no texts returned, filters too narrow.

Overview

MuRu Reviews installs like a standard Joomla extension -- one bundle zip containing the component, the module, the shortcode plugin, and the SP Page Builder addon -- and is configured from Components > MuRu Reviews in the administrator. There is no separate account, no external dashboard, and nothing public-facing to secure.

At its center sits one Review Engine: a provider fetches reviews from Google's official Places API (New) and normalizes them, the file cache stores them, and every display path -- module, {murureviews} shortcode, menu-item page, SP Page Builder addon -- renders that same cached data with the same SVG stars, rating summary, and Google attribution.

Pro keeps the same engine and adds your own manual reviews (merged with Google under one combined score), three more layouts, and keyword + source filters -- installing over Free as a regular Joomla update, with your settings carried across.

Review Sources

Refresh Now collects reviews from exactly the sources ticked in Settings > Review sources. Version 1.0 ships Google in Free and manual reviews in Pro; every future connector switches on in that same list -- no reinstall, no new setup.

Google Business Profile (Free)

Your Place ID plus a Places API (New) key. Fetches rating, text, author, avatar, and date, with your average score and total count on the dashboard.

Manual / custom reviews (Pro)

Paste testimonials as JSON -- a sample file ships with the extension -- and they merge with Google reviews under one combined score.

Trustpilot, JED, Facebook & more (roadmap)

Already listed in Settings as coming soon: Trustpilot, JED, Facebook, Tripadvisor, Yelp, G2, and Capterra. Each ships behind its official API.

Multiple Google locations (roadmap)

Version 1.0 covers one Business Profile location; multi-location support is a planned Pro feature.

Never scraping, ever.

Every provider uses an official API -- Google Places API (New) today. A source without an official route stays honestly disabled in Settings rather than half-working, and stub providers throw instead of silently returning nothing.

Layouts

Six layouts in version 1.0, available on all four display paths. Pick per placement: a Cards grid on the homepage, a compact List in the sidebar, a Testimonial spotlight on the about page -- each placement keeps its own layout while sharing the same data and defaults.

Cards (Free)

Responsive grid of review cards -- the homepage social-proof classic.

List (Free)

Compact stacked rows for sidebars, footers, and narrow columns.

Basic carousel (Free)

Dependency-free horizontal slider with prev/next arrows and dots. Vanilla JS, no library.

Masonry (Pro)

Staggered grid that fits reviews of any length without awkward gaps.

Testimonial (Pro)

Large-quote spotlight for featuring one review at a time.

Badge (Pro)

Compact trust badge: your score and review count at a glance.

Slider, Minimal, Dark, Summary, and Wall layouts are on the Pro roadmap. In Free, Pro layouts stay visible but disabled with a (Pro) label wherever a layout can be picked -- discoverable, never hidden.

Display Paths

One setup, four ways to publish. Every path reads the same cache with the same renderer, so the homepage module and the testimonials page can never disagree -- and every path degrades gracefully instead of fataling a page.

Module

Content > Site Modules > New > MuRu Reviews. Pick a position, layout, count (0 = all cached), minimum rating, and show toggles. Publish.

Shortcode

{murureviews layout="cards" count="6" min_rating="4"} in any article or Custom HTML module. Attributes for layout, count (0-50), min_rating (0-5), show_date/show_avatar/show_source, plus keyword/source in Pro. Unknown values fall back to safe defaults.

Menu item (full page)

Menus > [Your menu] > New > MuRu Reviews > Reviews. A full-page review wall with the rating summary on top.

SP Page Builder addon

Edit any SP page, open the addons panel, and drop in MuRu Reviews (Muru category; "MuRu Reviews (Pro)" in Pro). Same options as the module, a live preview that updates as you edit, and a muted placeholder -- never a broken page -- when the component or API key is missing.

Every render carries Google attribution (required by Google's terms), per-star SVG ratings with the exact value in the aria-label, and lazy-loading avatars with an initials fallback.

Caching & Performance

Frontend rendering never calls Google -- it reads the file cache only. API fetches happen when you click Refresh Now in the administrator (scheduled refresh is a planned Pro feature), so visitors never wait on Google and no visitor data is ever sent to Google.

Refresh Now / Clear Cache

One click on the dashboard refetches from your ticked sources or empties the cache. Cached-vs-total counts show exactly what is stored.

TTL you control

Cache duration options of 1h, 6h, 12h (default), 24h, or 7 days.

Dependency-free output

Hand-written HTML/CSS with a vanilla-JS carousel. No CDN scripts, no third-party fonts or images, no render-blocking requests.

Google reviewer avatars are the only runtime exception to the no-remote-assets rule: they render as <img loading="lazy"> with an initials fallback, never as blocking CSS or JS.

Installation

  1. 1

    Install the bundle

Joomla admin > System > Install > Extensions, upload the pkg_murureviews zip -- component, module, shortcode plugin, and SP Page Builder addon install together.

  2. 2

    Enable the plugins

System > Manage > Plugins, search "MuRu Reviews", and enable the content shortcode and SP Page Builder plugins.

  3. 3

    Connect Google

Components > MuRu Reviews > Settings: tick your Review sources, paste the Google Place ID (finder link included) and a Places API (New) key, set display defaults and cache duration.

  4. 4

    Refresh and publish

Back on the Dashboard, click Refresh Now and confirm your score and reviews appear -- then publish a module, shortcode, menu item, or SPPB addon wherever you want them.

  5. 5

    Stay updated

New releases arrive through System > Update > Extensions on both Free and Pro -- Pro installs over Free as an update, settings intact.

Requirements

Joomla 5 or 6

Native Joomla 5/6 extension using Joomla\CMS APIs only -- no backwards-compatibility plugin needed.

PHP 8.1 or newer

The installer blocks older PHP and Joomla versions with a clear message instead of half-installing.

SP Page Builder 4/5/6 (addon only)

Required only for the page-builder addon; the module, shortcode, and menu item work without it.

Google Places API (New) key

Server-side calls only, so the key can -- and should -- be IP-restricted. The setup-guide link ships inside Settings.

Privacy

Review fetching runs server-side -- your server talks to the Google Places API, caches the result locally, and serves visitors from that cache. No visitor data is sent to Google by the frontend, and there are no accounts and no telemetry in Free.

Google attribution links and reviewer avatars are the only Google URLs in the output (attribution is required by Google's terms; avatars lazy-load). Pro stores its license key locally and verifies it against the store on Activate only. Outbound connections in total: Joomla update checks, Google Places fetches on refresh, and Pro license verification.
