MuRu Reviews installs like any standard Joomla extension. One bundle zip contains everything: the component, the module, the shortcode plugin, and the SP Page Builder addon.

Requirements

Joomla 5 or 6 -- native extension, no backwards-compatibility plugin needed.
PHP 8.1 or newer. The installer refuses older versions with a clear message instead of half-installing.
SP Page Builder 4, 5, or 6 -- only if you want the page-builder addon. The module, shortcode, and menu page work without it.
A Google Places API (New) key -- covered in Connect Your Google Business Profile.

Install in 2 minutes

In the Joomla admin go to System > Install > Extensions and upload pkg_murureviews-X.Y.Z.zip.

What to fill in

Review sources -- tick Google (and Manual reviews in Pro).
Google Place ID -- your Business Profile place ID. A finder link is built into Settings.
Google API key -- a Places API (New) key. Follow Google's setup guide to create one.
Display defaults -- layout, review count (0 = show everything cached), minimum rating, and show toggles.
Cache duration -- default 12 hours. The frontend always serves the cache, never Google directly.

Restrict your API key by IP address, not HTTP referrer. All Google calls run server-side, so a referrer restriction would block your own server.

Fetch your reviews

Back on the Dashboard, click Refresh Now. You should see your average rating, total count, and cached reviews. If the fetch fails, the Dashboard shows the API error inline.

Google shows a rating but no review texts? That is usually a Google-side state -- some profiles have rating-only reviews, or the key/project lacks review data. The Dashboard says so explicitly instead of blaming your filters.

Update

Go to System > Update > Extensions.
Free and Pro each register their own update feed, so the right release appears automatically. Pro feeds carry your license download ID.

Updating (or reinstalling over the current version) never deletes saved data: Place ID, API key, display defaults, manual reviews, license key, and the review cache all survive.

Upgrade Free to Pro

Install the Pro bundle over Free as a normal update -- same element names, settings carried across untouched. Then paste your key under Settings > License and Activate.

Uninstall

System > Manage > Extensions, filter "MuRu", select the package (or pieces) and Uninstall. This removes files, database rows, and the saved configuration -- a full uninstall is the one operation that clears settings, which is standard Joomla behavior.

API error on refresh

The Dashboard shows Google's error inline. Usual causes: API key without the Places API (New) enabled, a wrong Place ID, or billing not enabled on the Google Cloud project. Fix it there and refresh again.

Rating shown, but no review texts

Not a bug: some profiles have rating-only reviews, or the key/project lacks review data. The Dashboard states this explicitly. Nothing in your filters can fix a Google-side absence.

"No reviews match the current filters"

Your minimum rating, count, keyword, or source filter excludes everything cached. Loosen one control (or pass 0 / empty) and check again.

Pro features locked after activating

Open Settings > License and read the status line -- it names the exact verdict (expired, revoked, wrong product, site limit). Reactivating re-checks against the store.

The module is the fastest way to show reviews in a template position -- homepage, sidebar, or footer.

Create one

Go to Content > Site Modules > New > MuRu Reviews.
Pick a position, a layout (Cards, List, Basic carousel -- Pro adds Masonry, Testimonial, Badge), a review count (0 = all cached), and a minimum rating.
Set the show toggles (summary, date, avatar, source), assign menu pages, and publish.

Each module keeps its own layout and filters while sharing the same cached data -- the homepage grid and the sidebar list can never disagree. Pro adds keyword and source filters on top. See Layouts & Filters for what each option does.

Pro can collect several Google locations with the same API key.

In Settings → Google Business Profile set First location label (optional) for the Place ID above, e.g. Downtown.
Add the rest in Additional Google locations, one per line as PlaceID | Label. The label is optional; without one the business name Google returns is used.
Click Refresh Now.

Each review now carries a location chip. To show a single branch use the location option on a module, shortcode, menu item or SP addon (it matches part of the label, case-insensitively).

Lines starting with # are ignored, so you can keep notes in the field.

When several sources are connected, Refresh Now collects each one and combines them:

The overall average is weighted by each source's total review count (not by how many texts the API returned).
The rating summary shows a chip per source with its own score and count.
The attribution line becomes Reviews from Google, Trustpilot, … and links each source to its profile when the API provides one.

If one source fails (bad key, quota, outage) the others are still saved and the dashboard shows a warning naming the source. The failing source's reviews are simply missing from the cache until you fix it and refresh again.

Hiding does not delete anything at the source, and the aggregated rating still reflects the source's own totals.

Visitors only ever read the file cache; nothing is fetched on a page view.

Refresh Now fetches every ticked and configured source and rewrites the cache.
Clear Cache empties it (the widget shows a placeholder until the next refresh).
Cache duration - 1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours (default), 24 hours or 7 days; after that the dashboard marks the cache Stale.
Only one refresh runs at a time, so a double click can't hammer an API quota.

Scheduled (automatic) refresh is not part of 1.1.0. Click Refresh Now after changing credentials, and whenever you want fresh reviews.

All fetching is server-side; visitors never contact a review site through MuRu Reviews and no visitor data is sent to any source.
Credentials stay in your Joomla component parameters on your server and are masked from every error message.
Output uses no CDN scripts, fonts or images. The only remote requests from the page are Google's required attribution links and lazy-loaded reviewer avatars (with an initials fallback).
The review cache is a PHP file that begins with a die guard, so it discloses nothing even if direct access is attempted.
Outbound connections overall: Joomla update checks, the source APIs you enable (on refresh), and Pro licence verification.
No scraping - ever. Every connector uses an official API with your own credentials.

Do I need SP Page Builder?

No - only for the page-builder addon.

Which sources can I combine?

In Pro, all of them at once: Google (several locations), Trustpilot, Facebook, Tripadvisor, Yelp, G2, JED, Capterra and manual reviews.

Can I show only my best reviews?

Yes: minimum rating and count on every path; in Pro also keyword, source, location and date filters, plus Hide for individual reviews.

Will it slow my site?

No. Pages read a local cache and the output is dependency-free HTML and CSS.

What happens if my Pro licence expires?

Your site keeps showing Free-level output (Google on all four paths). Settings and credentials are kept and everything returns when the licence is active again.
