Placement

Theme Takeover

Last updated: October 17, 2026

Edition: Free (also in Pro)

What it does

Theme Takeover places your header and footer on the page by replacing the Helix header (<header id="sp-header">) and footer (<footer id="sp-footer">) in the finished page. Nothing is written to template files or template settings, so updating or reinstalling Helix Ultimate or SP Page Builder does not remove your work.

The safety rules

  • It replaces an element only when it appears exactly once with a matching closing tag. Otherwise the theme's own header or footer stays.
  • It skips pop-ups and other component-only pages, AJAX and raw output, non-HTML responses and the SP Page Builder editor.
  • If a JHFB module already shows that header or footer on the page, Theme Takeover skips it, so you never get two.
  • The kill switch turns it off instantly.

Turning it on or off

It is on by default for the header and the footer. See Configuring Placement & Plugin Settings.

If the Helix markup changes

If a future Helix Ultimate release renames the header or footer element, Theme Takeover cannot find it. Your theme's own header and footer keep showing, the page is not changed, and a warning appears in the Health Check under Recent errors (at most once an hour). The extension then needs an update.

With Helix's Predefined Header turned on, Helix does not output the layout's Header row, so a module placed in that row never shows. Theme Takeover is not affected, which is one reason it is the default.
